2023 Infill and Expansion Plans
Citi Bike is growing in Brooklyn Community Boards 8 and 9 and Queens Community Board 2! As the system grows, demand in the system's core increases. New stations improve capacity and system density. New stations enable more Citi Bike trips for more New Yorkers, regardless of where they start or end their trips.
The maps of proposed stations in CBs 308, 309 and 402 is available. If you have any feedback or questions, please feel free to reach out at bikeshare@dot.nyc.gov.

Public and private hospital employees, including custodial workers and other support staff, will be eligible to sign up for the program through their place of employment until February 7th, 2022.

Infill is the process of increasing capacity by adding stations and docks to the existing service area. As the system grows, demand in the system’s core (particularly Manhattan south of 60th Street) increases. Infill will improve system density and increase capacity, thereby enabling more Citi Bike trips for more New Yorkers.

Citi Bike Breaks Ridership Records in June 2021!
Lyft recently announced that Citi Bike ended June 2021 with a new ridership record. Over 3 million trips were taken in the month of June 2021, breaking the previous record by almost 500,00 rides! Additionally, on June 18th, the single day ridership record was also broken, with 123,185 trips taken!

NYC DOT, Council Member Rodriguez and Lyft Celebrate New Inwood and Washington Heights Citi Bike Stations, Which Will Complete Manhattan Expansion
The New York City Department of Transportation and Lyft today joined City Council Transportation Chair Ydanis Rodriguez and Upper Manhattan community organizations today to celebrate the launch of a Citi Bike expansion in Inwood and Washington Heights that will extend the bike share service area from the Battery to 220th Street, covering the entire island of Manhattan.

Draft Plan for Manhattan Community Board 12 now available!
The draft plan map for the northern half of Manhattan Community Board 12 is now available on the website. This draft plan map shows bike share locations north of West 184th Street. NYC DOT presented this draft plan to Manhattan Community Board 12's Traffic & Transportation Committee on Monday, January 4th. This comes after presenting the draft plan for the southern half of the board in June 2020, with installations occurring later in the summer.

Citi Bike has announced First Ride FREE, presented by Healthfirst. This allows people who has never used Citi Bike to redeem a free 30 minute ride on a classic Citi Bike. They can also unlock an ebike for free, only paying $0.15/minute. Unlike previous "free ride" days, this can be redeem anytime over a two week period. The free ride can be redeemed from August 29th to September 12th.

Citi Bike, New York city's bike share program, recently achieved it 100 millionth trip since it's launch in May 2013! Since the program launched, New Yorkers and visitors from around the world have demonstrated that bike share is a fast, healthy, and affordable mode of transportation. In 2019, DOT and Lyft announced the next expansion of Citi Bike. The expansion will double the size of the service area, covering all of Manhattan and significant portions of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, and increase the system’s fleet to 40,000 bikes.

Expansion of Citi Bike into the Bronx and Upper Manhattan now taking place!
The expansion of Citi Bike into the Bronx and Upper Manhattan started on Wednesday, May 6th. More than 100 new stations will be added to Bronx Community Board 1 and Manhattan Community Boards 9, 10, and 11. This includes stations outside of Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx (pictured above) and Harlem Hospital in Manhattan, giving essential workers a safe and accessible mode of transportation.

Lyft announced that, starting today, pedal-assist electric Citi Bikes, which first debuted summer 2018, will be returning to the system fleet. The e-bikes were originally pulled due to braking issues. These new bikes are a different model from the earlier bikes, and 250 will be available starting today. By the end of 2020, the number of available bikes bikes will reach several thousand.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Commissioner Polly Trottenberg today released a progress report on the Green Wave, the City’s plan to make streets safer for cyclists. The City has built 104 miles of protected bike lanes (PBLs) since 2014, including 21.4 miles completed in 2019. The de Blasio Administration has built over 400 miles of bike lanes since 2014.

In early February, NYC DOT went to Manhattan Community Boards 9, 10, and 11, as well as Bronx Community Board 1 to present a draft plan for Citi Bike stations in their neighborhood. The draft plan takes into account the public outreach we've received, as well as other siting criteria, including ADA accessibility, parking loss and nearby utilities. Installations are expected to start in these areas later this spring.

Update: Electric Bikes Returning This Winter, with New Pricing
Electric Bikes Will Be Back This Winter
Lyft recently announced that pedal-assist electric Citi Bikes, which first debuted last summer 2018, will be returning Winter 2019/2020. Earlier this year, the e-bikes were pulled amid braking issues. The new e-bikes will have a different brake setup, as well as new battery supplier, and several hundred bikes will be launched.

Fighting Gridlock: DOT and NYPD Announce 2019 “Gridlock Alert” Days, As Well As Improved Cycling Access During Next Week’s United Nations General Assembly; Citi Bike Offers Gridlock Discount
The New York City Department of Transportation today announced its 2019 Gridlock Alert Days, which for the second year will include the week of United Nations General Assembly (September 23rd to September 30th). Data from the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) note that travel speeds in the Midtown Central Business District on those days are slower than on the ten traditional Gridlock Alert days around the November and December holidays.

Pick Up a Free Month of Citi Bike at Nearly 60 Public Libraries in NYC
Citi Bike is partnering with the public library systems in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens to offer one month of free Citi Bike rides for NYCHA residents and SNAP recipients.
More than 7,500 New Yorkers have signed up for Reduced Fare Bike Share in its first year, riding twice as often as annual members. With the help of the City’s libraries, Lyft wants to say Thank You!

New York City Department of Transportation has released a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) that would create a new demonstration project for dockless bike share in the Rockaways. This demonstration project is modeled after the Staten Island RFEI that was released earlier this year.

The New York City Council passed Intro 1457-A, a bill to allows cyclists to follow "Leading Pedestrian Signals" or LPI. LPIs are when a walk signal starts before showing a green light to car traffic. These signals improve pedestrian traffic by allowing pedestrians to cross before turning vehicles. This change makes cyclists more visible in the intersections, where most crashes occur.
The bill, drafted by Carlos Menchaca, goes into effect December 20th.

Car Free Earth Day is an annual car-free event, which will be held this year on Saturday, April 27th, the Saturday immediately following Earth Day. The Event opens thirty blocks of Broadway from Times Square to Union Square for people to explore on foot during event hours, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Programming is presented at six rest stops: Times Square (42nd Street and Broadway), Garment (38th Street and Broadway), Herald Square (34th Street and Broadway), City Zone (26th Street and Broadway), Flatiron (23rd Street and Broadway), and Union Square (17th Street and Broadway).

Fighting Congestion: DOT Announces Expansion of “Gridlock Alert"; Citi Bike Offers Gridlock Discount
The New York City Department of Transportation announced today that New York City would for the first time expand the City’s Gridlock Alert days to this year include the week of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September 24th to October 1st. Data from the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) note that travel speeds in the Midtown Central Business District on those days are slower than on the ten traditional Gridlock Alert days around the November and December holidays.

Citi Bike will give New Yorkers access to sturdy, safe bikes at self-service docking stations around the city. People can use the bikes by becoming long- or short-term members. Annual members enroll online and receive a touch pass for unlocking bikes. For one- or seven-day memberships, users can sign up at any station kiosk with a credit card. The bikes can be returned to any station in the system, creating an efficient network with many possible points and combinations of departure and arrival. With membership, users can take an unlimited number of trips.

Two Wheel Transit: NYC Bike Share opened recently to a standing-room-only crowd with a talk by DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and Alta Bicycle Share president Alison Cohen. The exhibition, running through February 4 at the Center for Architecture, features bike share bikes from around the world, plus video and information about bike share systems, as well as showing how bike share will work in New York City. New York City is introducing bike share in order to give New Yorkers more options for getting around the city. Did you know that forty percent of all trips in New York are less than one mile and sixty-seven percent of all trips are less than three miles? Bike share will make these trips cheap, easy, efficient and fast. The system will also give New Yorkers access to a bike when they want one, without having to worry about storage or maintenance.
