Fall 2011: Bike Share Demonstrations

Throughout the fall, NYC DOT and Alta Bicycle Share will be teaming up to present bike share demonstrations throughout the city. Bike share demonstrations are opportunities for New Yorkers to see how bike share will work. Stop by any demonstration to test ride a bike, check out the bike share equipment, ask questions and give feedback about the program.

Bike Share Demonstration: Manhattan Bridge Archway, DUMBO

Saturday, September 17th, 2011, 12:00 pm–4:00 pm

Join us this Saturday, September 17! Come try out the bike share bikes in Manhattan Bridge Archway, one of Brooklyn’s newest iconic spaces. The archway, which was returned to the public in 2009 after being used for DOT storage for 17 years, has hosted the Brooklyn Flea, DUMBO Fight Night, and Royal Wedding viewing party. Ride the bikes around DUMBO or just stay within the car-free Archway.

Try out the bikes then swing by the Brooklyn Local, a urban-foodie fundraising event for City Harvest down the road at the Tobacco Warehouse!

The event will be cosponsored by DUMBO Business Improvement District and will take place from 12-4 pm.

Bike Share Demonstration: Bowling Green

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011, 12:00 pm–3:00 pm

Come visit NYC DOT and Alta Bicycle Share at Bowling Green at the foot of Broadway at Battery Place in Manhattan. Test out the city’s newest transportation option on your lunch break! Try out the bikes and learn more about the upcoming bike share program. The bikes will be directly in front of the National Museum of the American Indian, on the south end of the park near the subway entrance.

The demo is co-sponsored by Council Member Margaret Chin.

Bike Share Demonstration: DeKalb Market

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011, 12:00 pm–4:00 pm

Bike, shop, and eat at Brooklyn newest market! Stop by the DeKalb Market – a collection of shops and restaurants located in jewel-box shipping containers on a construction site at Flatbush and Willoughby. Opened in July 2011, the DeKalb Market is in operation seven days a week and provides New Yorkers with artisanal foods, local clothing designs, art galleries and an operating farm.

We’ll be on-site from 12-4 pm showing off the bikes and talking about the bike share system. We’ll be set up in Courtyard D, on the Willoughby end of the market.

Bike Share Demonstration: Brooklyn Flea

Saturday, September 24th, 2011, 12:00 pm–4:00 pm

Test ride a bike, check out the bike share equipment, ask questions and give feedback about the program at the Brooklyn Flea‘s Fort Greene location. The bikes will be located on Lafayette Avenue right outside the Flea entrance, between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues.

Friday, September 30th, 2011, 12:00 pm–4:00 pm

Join us at McCarren Park between Williamsburg and Greenpoint in Brooklyn to test ride the bikes and ask our staff questions. Bikes will be located at the corner of Bedford Avenue and N. 12th Street.

Bike Share Demonstration: Grand Army Plaza

Saturday, October 1st, 2011, 12:00 pm–4:00 pm

Test bike share out at Grand Army Plaza! Grab some local produce at Brooklyn’s largest farmer’s market and test ride the bikes along Prospect Park West. Bikes will be located on the top of Prospect Park West, just around the corner from Grand Army Plaza.

In cooperation with  Park Slope Civic Council, Park Slope Neighbors, the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council, and Council Member Letitia James.

Bike Share Demonstration: Atlantic Antic

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011, 12:00 pm–6:00 pm

On Sunday, October 2, come celebrate Brooklyn with at least 500,000 of your closest friends! The Atlantic Antic, a one-mile long street festival with local bands, local food and vendors galore is equipped with bike share for its 37th year.

A bike share demo station will be set up from 12-6 pm at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Nevins Street, and friendly staff from NYC DOT and Alta Bicycle Share will be available to answer your questions and help you check out the bikes.

Bike Share Demonstration: Restoration Rocks Music Festival

Saturday, October 8th, 2011, 12:00 pm–4:00 pm

Party at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration’s annual Restoration Rocks music festival and then take a break to test ride the bikes and provide feedback to our staff. Bikes will be on the south sidewalk on Fulton Street between New York Avenue and Marcy Avenue.

Bike Share Demonstration: St. Catherine’s Park

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011, 11:00 am–3:00 pm

Spend a bucolic day at the Upper East Side’s lovely St. Catherine’s Park, located at 68th Street and First Avenue, with its iconic elephant sprinklers. Check out the bikes, ask our staff questions, and then grab a bit to eat on 1st Avenue. Bikes will be located on the north side of the park on 68th Street.

Bike Share Demonstration: Medgar Evers College

Thursday, October 13th, 2011, 11:00 am–3:00 pm

Come ride the bikes with the coolest students in Brooklyn! Take advantage of the Bedford Avenue bike lane to test ride the bikes. Afterward you can swing by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden or Prospect Park, both only a couple blocks away. Bikes will be located at the main entrance to the College at 1650 Bedford Avenue, at the corner of Crown Street.

Friday, October 14th, 2011, 3:00 pm–7:00 pm

Kick off your weekend right! Pick up a bike in Tompkins Square Park, the East Village’s pre-eminent park. After you work up an appetite on a free test ride, get dinner in one of the East Village’s many restaurants. Bikes will be located on the Avenue A side of the park.

Check out the bikes of the future at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn’s park of the future, as part of Open House New York weekend. Marvel at the Manhattan views and admire the latest developments in park design- including salt marshes and boat launches! Bikes will be located at Pier 1 right by the Brooklyn Bridge.

Bike Share Demonstration: Washington Market Park

Come visit bike share in the heart of Tribeca! Join DOT at Washington Market Park on historic Greenwich Street during Open House New York weekend. Tour the neighborhood then check out the Hudson River Greenway a block away. Our knowledgeable staff will be there to answer your questions and take feedback. Bikes will on the Greenwich Avenue side of the park, just north of Chambers Street.

Bike Share Demonstration: Brooklyn Flea, Williamsburg

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011, 12:00 pm–4:00 pm

Come visits Williamsburg’s greatest market! Browse through racks of trendy clothes, vintage furniture, and local crafts at the Brooklyn Flea by Williamsburg’s East River. Then test out the bikes, visit the river and wave to Manhattan, and then come back to tell our attentive staff your thoughts on bike share. Bikes will be located on the North 7th side of the market between Kent Avenue and the East River.

Bike Share Demonstration: Washington Square Park

Monday, October 24th, 2011, 11:00 am–3:00 pm

Ride iconic bikes at one of the city’s most iconic parks. Located in the heart of the Village, Washington Square Park will put you in touch with your inner artist. Ride the bikes and then put your mind through the same workout playing one of the Park’s chess masters. Bikes will be located next to the Washington Square Arch.

In cooperation with Manhattan Community Board 2 and Council Members Margaret Chin and Rosie Mendez.

Bike Share Demonstration: High Line

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011, 11:00 am–3:00 pm

Take a walk on the High Line, one of NYC’s most innovative public spaces. Then head down to the street to take the bike share bikes for a spin. Bikes will be set up on the plaza below the High Line, at the corner of Gansevoort and Washington Streets.

Bike Share Demonstration: Hudson Square LentSpace

Thursday, October 27th, 2011, 12:00 pm–3:00 pm

Try out the bikes and give your feedback at LentSpace, a unique outdoor arts space in Hudson Square. Afterwards, take a tour of the “tree nursery,” which provides shade while incubating street trees that will eventually be planted in the neighborhood. Bikes will be set up on the east side of Varick Street between Grand and Canal Streets.

Bike Share Demonstration: Columbus Avenue & 76th Street

Sunday, October 30th, 2011, 12:00 pm–4:00 pm

Spend the day on the Upper West Side! Swing by the farmers market on Columbus Avenue and 78th, then check out the Greenflea, one of New York’s oldest open air markets inside the schoolyard on Columbus and 76th. After picking up vintage finds and new designs you and test out our fantastic new bikes! Bikes will be located on the sidewalk on the west side of Columbus Avenue just south of 76th Street.
